Hair care over 50
Embracing your 50s (and every era of life) with Sally
At Ethical Brand Co, we love celebrating stories that inspire us. Recently, we sat down with Sally, our Employee Relations Business Partner, to chat about life after 50, her favourite hair care rituals, and why she believes every era of life is worth celebrating.
Beauty and confidence after 50
For Sally, turning 50 has been about stepping into a new chapter of confidence and self-acceptance.
“I feel very comfortable in my skin. I know who I am, I know what suits me, and I know my favourite products. On many levels, this is my best era so far.”
Of course, that confidence didn’t happen overnight. Sally admits that in her 40s, she found it harder to embrace the natural signs of aging.
“When people would say, ‘these lines are from laughing and smiling,’ I’d go, ‘yeah, right.’”
But as the years have passed, her perspective has shifted, “Now I’m grateful for another lap around the sun – it’s a gift. With age comes gratitude, confidence, and freedom from worrying about judgment.”
Sally’s haircare routine
Sally has always loved hair and beauty, but since joining Ethical Brand Co, she’s deepened her commitment to sustainable and organic products.
Here’s what a typical haircare routine looks like for her thick, curly hair:
EverEscents Organic Lemon & Sandalwood Scalp Scrub: A gentle yet effective exfoliating scalp treatment designed to remove product build up and dead skin cells, deeply clarifying and balancing the scalp. A must-have for Sally: “I’ve got very thick hair and the Scalp Scrub has been amazing, especially because I’m in the ocean a lot in summer.”
Sally has tried a few Shampoos and Conditioners from the EverEscents range and is currently in love with the Remedy range: “I just love how they make my hair feel.”
EverEscents Organic Remedy Shampoo: A reconstructive shampoo formulated to gently repair hair damage. Mid-micron rice proteins and sweet almond oil gently repair the damaged hair shaft over time, without building up on the hair or causing brittleness.
EverEscents Organic Remedy Treatment: Designed to be used in place of a conditioner, this deeply nourishing and restorative treatment reverses the signs of hair damage.
While Sally loves to experiment with styling products, she admits: “I can’t stand hair on my face, so I often wear it back, it just feels more comfortable. But once I learnt how to implement styling product in my routine, my hair feels so healthy.”
Clever Curl Curl Cream: A rich curl cream that provides long lasting maximum moisture and beautiful definition with no hold. Sally said, “Once I learnt the routine of applying Curl Cream to wet hair, plopping, and wrapping in a microfibre towel, I really embraced my curls.”
EverEscents Organic Geranium Ultimate Hair Enhancer: Designed to nourish, detangle and enhance shine while improving the strength, condition and brightness of the hair. Essential amino acids and proteins from Arginine and Kerarice® provide UV protection, restores colour vitality and increases hair strength. This is one of Sally’s favourites for both styling and protection, “I love applying it to wet hair at the beach, it acts as a sun and natural element protecter.”
EverEscents Organic Orange & Sandalwood Heat Protector & Finishing Cream: A lightweight heat protector cream designed to be applied to wet or dry hair prior to heat styling to protect against damage. This versatile product is also great as a finishing product to reduce frizz and flyaways, perfect for when Sally is wearing an updo.
How Sally’s hair has changed
Sally has always had big, bouncy curls, but over the years instead of fighting it, she has embraced the natural look.
“I used to straighten my hair, but I decided years ago that life is way too short to spend an hour straightening. These days, it’s about embracing my curls and keeping them healthy. My best hair care advice to give would be to protect your hair from the sun and salt water by going to the beach with wet hair, and to get regular cuts.”
A holistic approach to self care
For Sally, self-care isn’t about extremes, it’s about balance, “Life is just to be fun,” she says. “I think people are overthinking it. Good foundations – drinking water, sun care, rest, community – that’s what really matters. Be connected with the earth, be part of society, and always give back.”
This ethos extends to her haircare, too; it’s not just about how her hair looks, but how it makes her feel and how the products impact the planet, “If you’re using products that aren’t harming the earth, that makes you feel good too.”
Having worked in fashion earlier in life, Sally admits her perspective has shifted dramatically, “Fast fashion, modern slavery, the dyes, the chemicals, the miles, the landfill… so much goes into it and it just didn’t sit right with me on so many levels.”
Now, her passion for sustainability is woven into every choice she makes from her wardrobe to her beauty routine, “I’ve become more conscious of organic and environmentally friendly products in all aspects of my life. I still love fashion, but now it’s about sustainable designers and products that are locally made.”
That shift is also why she resonates so deeply with the mission at Ethical Brand Co – products that nurture not just hair, but the planet too.
Celebrating every era of life
For Sally, beauty isn’t about impressing others but living authentically, “What you use for your hair or how you style it is not necessarily about how you look. It’s about how it makes you feel and also what it’s doing to the planet.”
Sally’s advice to people of all ages is, “Really embrace each era for whatever nature gives you. Every age is amazing. Live a wholesome life, say kind words, give back to your community, and have fun while you can.”
Whether it’s through embracing her curls, choosing organic products, or simply living with kindness and integrity, Sally reminds us that self care and beauty evolve with us and that life is always better when we embrace each season fully.
