1. Why did you decide to become a curl specialist and educator?
Hairdresser Education has always been a passion of mine from my days as a hairdresser who attended every education available, right throughout my career in the industry.
2. Is there anyone in particular who encouraged you to believe in yourself?
The biggest influences on my self-belief were definitely my parents.
3. What has been the biggest motivator in being a curl specialist?
I have been in the hair industry in excess of 40 years, and the biggest satisfaction is always attained by teaching someone something new, and then seeing them master that skill.
4. What is a piece of advice you would give a newbie curl specialist?
Trust the process, collaborate with other like minded hairdressers, learn from whoever, whenever you can, everyone has something to teach you no matter how small it may seem. Communicate with your clients, there can never be enough communication.
5. What is a piece of advice you would give a newbie curly?
Again; trust the process. Try it all and tweak the process to best suit your curls, and lifestyle.

Introducing Dave, Owner of the incredible @marciagibsons
Clever Curl Educator, Curl Specialist, and pioneer of the Clever Curl Tight Texture / Afro Masterclass. Dave inspires us daily with his incredible educational videos as well as his insatiable passion for learning everything there is to learn about curly hair.
We asked Dave a few questions about his personal journey and inspiration:
1. What inspired you to become a Curl Specialist and Educator?
I already had an education background so it just made sense to share something I was so passionate about with other hairdressers. Becoming a Curl Specialist made me fall so hard in love with hairdressing again and I had to share that joy.
2. Is there anyone in particular who encouraged you to believe in yourself?
When I started my journey with Tight Texture/Afro Hair I met two amazing women of colour, Ari and Cinty, who believed in me and continue to support me. They started my journey with Tight Texture/Afro hair and helped me to believe in myself.
3. What has been the biggest motivator in becoming and being a curl specialist?
Being able to conquer the thing that scarred me the most in traditional hairdressing - that one sentence from a client “Can you do my hair naturally curly?.”
4. What has been the biggest difficulty in becoming and being a curl specialist?
Having the confidence to actually put myself out there and call myself a “Curl Specialist”
5. What is a piece of advice you would give an emerging curl specialist?
Look, listen, learn. Get some great curl education and join the Clever Curl Community where other Curl Specialist like myself collaborate, not compete, and help each other out. There`s plenty of room around the table for us all to be Curl Specialists.
6. What is a piece of advice you would give a newbie curly?
Trust the process and connect with some great curl products like Clever Curl and a Curl Specialist who can start your journey with your Natural Texture. Most importantly, RELAX. If it doesn’t work just wet your curls and start again. That’s the beauty of natural texture and curls.
Make sure to keep an eye out on @clever_curl and @marciagibsons for more content from Dave 💜
