IS YOUR HAIR IN NEED OF A PROTEIN HIT? It’s no secret that hair needs a balance of protein and moisture to be healthy! So at some stage of your hair health journey chances are you will find yourself in need a treatment or hair care product that contains protein to help strengthen and repair damage.

Determining when you need to add protein to your hair care routine is the key to keeping your hair in optimum health.

Hair needs a protein boost when our natural hair proteins or Keratin in our hair strands have been broken down resulting in damage or breakage. This damage can occur in many ways, the most obvious is from colouring or lightening our hair but there are many other factors in our daily life that will contribute to hair damage

These factors include any chemical services on your hair, colouring, lightening, perming, chemical relaxing/straightening. Over styling and heat styling, environmental elements like the sun, wind, pollution, water quality. Sickness, medication, poor diet or vitamin deficiency can also contribute to hair health issues.

WHAT IS KERATIN?

Your hair is made up of tens of thousands of single hairs. Each individual hair strand is made up of chains of amino acids and proteins, primarily a protein called Keratin.

Keratin is a fibrous, structural protein found in human hair, nails and the epithelial cells in the outermost layers of the skin. Keratin helps maintain the hairs elasticity and keeps the hair healthy and strong.

When the hair is exposed to chemical, styling and environmental stressors it breaks down our keratin which will cause gaps or holes in the hair cuticle and unfortunately leads to damage and breakage occurring and leaves the internal hair structure vulnerable to more damage.

HOW DOES PROTEIN WORK?

Protein repairs and strengthens the hair strands, reduces breakage and fortifies the hair to help regain elasticity. It also helps to revitalize fine hair strands to make the hair visibly thicker.

It does this by attaching hydrolysed proteins to the hair cuticle to fill the gaps in the cuticle caused by any damage. This provides a barrier around the hair shaft which strengthens the hair and protects the hair against further damage.

SIGNS THAT YOUR HAIR NEEDS PROTEIN.

Do you colour or lighten your hair?

If you colour, lighten or have any other chemical services (perm/ chemical straightening) your hair may need a protein boost.  This is due to the chemicals used in these products raising the pH of the hair to open the cuticle during the service resulting in the hair being more porous and vulnerable to further damage.

Protein will help strengthen chemically treated hair by repairing any damage caused to the cuticle.

SIGNS THAT YOUR HAIR NEEDS PROTEIN

Hair is porous.

Does your hair feel frizzy , coarse or dry? Does it tangle easy? Does it absorb and release water faster than normal?

If you can relate to any of the above then it could be considered as highly porous. This means that there are likely gaps in the cuticle layer that make it more vulnerable and exposing the inner hair structure to stressors.

A protein treatment can help seal the gaps in porous hair to prevent further damage and deliver nourishment.

Hair has lost elasticity.

Hair that has lost its elasticity will not bounce back when stretched or will break very easily. This is a sure sign your hair is needing more protein to help fortify and strengthen the hair to regain its elasticity.

Hair breaks or sheds easily.

It is completely normal to lose up to 100 hair strands a day and this is part of the normal hair growth cycle. Excessive hair loss or hair that is not falling from the root and breaking off mid strand may be a sign that your hair is lacking in protein.

Hair loss can also be caused from stress, illness, medication, hormonal imbalances, vitamin deficiency, auto immune disorders, chemotherapy and more so if you are unsure on what could be causing your hair fall then your hairdresser is the best person to see for advice.

Hair appears lifeless and limp.

If your hair is flat, lifeless, limp or lacking volume it may be needing a protein boost. Protein helps revitalise hair, making the hair strands feel thicker and healthier.
